Orchard

In case you missed it, here are the pictures from my son's kindergarden field trip.

In political news, Tom DeLay has now been indicted. Certainly not unexpected with the trouble Jack Abramoff has been in lately, and DeLay had a number of embarassing ties with Abramoff. Still, I can't remember a congressman being indicted who was majority leader at the time during my lifetime. I once heard a Sports Illustrated golf writer on the radio talking about meeting DeLay and how DeLay wanted to go on and on talking about golf. I can see how he was seduced into accepting that very expensive golf trip to Scotland.

Somebody on NRO made a good point yesterday: the American public doesn't buy into the "innocent until proven guilty" thing. Even with the Michael Jackson thing, it wasn't hard to believe that the mother could be making stuff up to get money, but the vast majority of people made up their minds right away that he was guilty. My point is, unless you are very well-informed, it's probably not a wise thing to rush to a judgement.

Innocent until proven guilty is greatly overemphasized, especially in criminal cases. Believing that someone is really innocent in a criminal case, in most cases, means believing that the police, the prosecuting attorney, and the judge that bound the case over for trial are all wrong. DeLay's case is somewhat different, but there was a grand jury that voted that there was enough evidence to indict him.

It does seem though, that Republicans in congress would like to create some difference between them and DeLay. The thought that the RNC is part of a money laundering scheme is not something the RNC would like to to see emphasized in the news. Whatever happens, DeLay will probably be unable to be majority leader for as long as a year while the legal process plays out.

He still didn't necessarily do anything wrong. Politicians are notorious for being lily-livered. And even if he didn't do anything wrong, the damage to his name has already been done. Republicans can't get away with the vast-left- wing conspiracy ploy regardless of the facts. In politics, sometimes even an empty accusation is very powerful.

And if DeLay is convicted...
